Free Download Manager (FDM) Alternative for Mac
Free Download Manager (FDM) is one of the names that comes up first when you search for a free download manager. On a Mac, the question is whether you want a cross-platform client or a native app that also does playlists and conversion.
What FDM already covers
FDM accelerates HTTP downloads, integrates with browsers, can catch videos and includes BitTorrent. It also runs on Windows and Linux, which is useful if you switch machines. That breadth is why it has lasted so long.
What a Mac-native alternative adds
AVS Download Manager is built for macOS 14+. You get multi-connection transfers, Chrome / Edge / Brave capture, YouTube videos and playlists, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) streams, magnet links, .torrent files, and a built-in converter for MP4, MKV, MP3, M4A and WAV — plus a menu bar utility and App Lock with Touch ID.
How to choose
Keep FDM if you need one product on Windows and Mac. Switch to AVS if you only use a Mac and want playlists, conversion and a native interface in the same free app.
Frequently asked questions
Is AVS the same as Free Download Manager?
No. AVS is an independent macOS app. It is not affiliated with Free Download Manager or SoftDeluxe.
