AVS Download Manager vs Internet Download Manager
Internet Download Manager (IDM) is the best-known download manager on Windows. AVS Download Manager is a free, native download manager for macOS. Here's how they actually compare, feature by feature — no marketing spin.
The platform difference
The most important difference is simple: IDM runs only on Windows, and AVS runs only on macOS. If you're on a Mac, IDM isn't an option — AVS was built to fill exactly that gap, natively, rather than through emulation.
Where the feature sets overlap
Both apps accelerate downloads with multi-connection transfers, integrate with browsers to capture downloads, detect videos on pages, download YouTube playlists, and offer scheduling, queues and speed limits. For the core download-manager experience, a Mac user switching from IDM to AVS loses nothing.
Where AVS goes further
- Torrent client built in — magnet links and .torrent files with per-file selection
- Built-in media converter: MP4, MKV, MP3, M4A, WAV
- Menu bar utility and native macOS notifications
- App Lock with Touch ID
- Free forever — IDM requires a paid license after the trial
