How to Download Large Files on Mac
A 20 GB file in Safari is a single point of failure: sleep the lid, drop Wi-Fi, and you start again. Large files need resume, a visible queue and enough disk — not another tab.
Check disk first
Leave headroom beyond the file size. macOS needs free space for virtual memory and APFS snapshots. If the target volume is almost full, move the download folder or clear room before you start.
Use resume, not refresh
A download manager that supports resume writes the file in segments and continues from the last complete piece. AVS Download Manager does this for regular HTTP downloads and shows segment progress in the detail window. Closing the lid is fine; open the app again and continue.
Queue instead of parallel chaos
Ten huge files at once will fight each other. Queue them, set a speed limit if you still need the Mac to stay usable, or schedule the job overnight.
