How to Download HLS / M3U8 Streams on Mac
HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is a playlist of tiny segments, usually advertised as an .m3u8 URL. Safari and Chrome play it. Saving it as one file needs a client that fetches every segment and stitches them.
Why “Save Video As” fails
There is often no single MP4 on the page. The player reads a manifest, then pulls segments. Right-click save grabs the page or nothing. Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) works the same way with a different manifest.
Download the stream with AVS
- Keep AVS Download Manager open
- Use the Chrome, Edge or Brave extension on the page — or paste the .m3u8 / page URL into the app
- Pick quality when the stream offers variants
- Let AVS fetch the segments and write one file into the library
Rights still apply
Only save streams you have the right to download. AVS does not bypass Digital Rights Management (DRM). If the player is DRM-protected, the download will not unlock it.
